Papers, 1742-1838.

This collection contains various accounts, a copy of James Putnam's will, dated 1788, and many letters written to his brother, Dr. Ebenezer Putnam (1717-1788), of Salem, Mass. Those written previous to the Revolution contain references to James Putnam's possible re-marriage in 1754, various purchases for his brother to make in Salem, and the necessity of receiving a smallpox inoculation in 1774. Several letters sent shortly after the Revolution contain remarks revealing his embittered attitude toward America's independence and the proscription of his estates, Britain's "poor" handling of the war itself, and his belief that European nations will never accept America as a trading nation. The letters also contain references to Shay's Rebellion, America's Confederation problems, and his financial situation as an employee of the Canadian government. The papers of James Putnam, Jr. include a certificate of payment due from his estate in Worcester and claims held against it by members of the Salisbury family, Putnam's appointment as attorney for the family in executing his father's will, his appointment of an attorney in Worcester for legal actions concerning his claims in Massachusetts, and a brief biography of him written by William Lincoln (1801-1843) in 1838.
